about

Pain, suffering and helplessness interspersed with acts of true human kindness: this is what the Stations of the Cross mean to me and, no doubt, to many Christians. However, this powerful narrative, which has inspired artists, musicians and film-makers, is dark and nihilistic without awareness of the final piece in the jigsaw – the Resurrection.

It was after the annual parish 'Way of the Cross' service on Good Friday morning in 2008 that a parishioner approached me and suggested that I should produce a musical setting to accompany future years' Stations. Inspired by this, and with James Macmillan's 'Seven Last Words of Christ' and the spiritual soundtrack works of Ennio Morricone and Peter Gabriel fresh in my mind, I immediately went home to my piano and incredibly, the music began to flow forth.

Within a week, I had composed 14 pieces and began work arranging and recording them at the studio of my great friend, John Hickey. The music was recorded quickly with the help of my brother, Joe, who added bass and drumming to some of the tracks.

Sadly, during this project, I lost both of my Parents within a month of each other; they had been through pain, suffering and helplessness but had received genuine acts of human kindness from many people during their periods of ill-health. To me, they had lived the Stations of the Cross. These experiences spurred me on to complete the work as quickly as possible. (I actually used the track 'Resurrection' as the processional music at my mum's funeral.)

I hope you find this music as moving and challenging as I intended it to be, either as an aid to prayer or just to listen to at home or anywhere.
